Wave Taco: Where the City Meets the Sand

A decade ago, the corner of Convention Plaza and 14th Street was a desolate parking lot. Today, it’s where the city meets the sand.

Wait, what?

Most people wouldn’t expect to see sand and tiki huts in the heart of Downtown St. Louis. But that’s exactly why Brian and Shannon Williams established Wave Taco: the Downtown area’s only beach volleyball venue with a bar.

It’s a tropic twist on the typical happy hour. Instead of huddling around a pub table in work attire, guests trade their loafers and heels for flip-flops to hit the only beach in Downtown St. Louis.

“We felt that Downtown needed a destination like this,” said Brian Williams. “It’s a laid-back vibe…we want you barefoot, we want you in a tank-top.”

Whether you’re a pro with a powerful serve or a beginner who barely gets the ball over the net, Wave Taco has options for you. League play is Sunday through Thursday for all different skill levels. Other tournaments include Friday Night Draws and all-you-can-drink “Beer Bash” tournaments on Saturdays.

Wave Taco Juniors for boys and girls ages 14-17 lets players improve their skills in the sand with 4-on-4 leagues. Juniors, which has grown to more than 30 teams, has become increasingly popular over the past few years.

In addition to hosting leagues and tournaments, Wave Taco also puts on private events. Want to celebrate your birthday in the sand but don’t feel like flying to Florida? Need a new way to reward your employees? Wave Taco will reserve the courts (and the bar) just for you.

It doesn’t matter if you’re 15 or 50, whether you come for the competition, the tropical vibe, or the drink deals—everybody is welcome to take a mini vacation where the city meets the sand.
